With the support of NSERC’s (Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada) CREATE (Collaborative Research and Training Experience) grant, Carleton University’s READi (Research and Education in Accessibility, Design and Education) program is offering IDES5500 a seminar on Accessibility and Inclusive Design through the School of Industrial Design at Carleton University, Ottawa, Canada.

The course provides foundational knowledge, exploring interdisciplinary approaches for incorporating accessible, inclusive, and human-centered design principles into the research, design, and development of products, information, and environments that can be used by all people, regardless of ability.

This site documents 5 Case Studies focused on Accessibility & Inclusive Design Leaders developed by interdisciplinary teams of students. The students set out to address current and evolving perspectives on disability and accessibility that are relevant to taking a lead in bringing accessibility to the forefront in the areas of engineering, information communications technology, and design.  Through interviews and further investigation students explored how different researchers approach their work within the context of the larger body of work in their own and related fields. The objectives were to:1.

  1. Identify leaders across disciplines, the methods and processes they use, their approach to working with user populations, their key contributions, and how (or if) their work influences the interdisciplinary field of accessible and inclusive design.
  2. Begin an online resource that can be used by others, especially READi scholars and partners, to understand and differentiate among Accessible and Inclusive Design Leaders and their approaches to creating products, services and/or environments.
